Marc Jacobs (creative director of Louis Vuitton) and supermodel Naomi Capmbell teamed up to support The White Ribbon Alliance. The White Ribbon Alliance is an international coalition of organizations and individuals, spanning 142 countries. The coalition is dedicated to lobbying world leaders to support safe motherhood initiatives and reduce preventable deaths, making pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns.

Ms. Campbell visited the Louis Vuitton headquarters in Paris to select a bag priced at 1,900 euros, or $2,789 at current exchange. Starting next March, Vuitton’s network of 439 stores will launch the campaign and a portion of the proceeds will be donated towards the charity. The launch coincides with the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day that month. Ms. Campbell has also committed to donating all proceeds from an upcoming auction of her Hermès bags.

Congratulations to President Obama for Winning the Nobel Peace Prize!

The Nobel Committee gave the peace prize to President Obama less than a year after his election “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” President Obama is the third sitting President to win a Nobel Prize for peace. He accepted the award and expressed his surprise and humility. "I will accept this award as a call to action, a call to all nations to confront the challenges of the 21st century," Obama said in a White House Rose Garden appearance. "This award must be shared with everyone who strives for justice and dignity."

Here's a tidbit from his speech he gave this morning in the rose garden at the White House:
"After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, "Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday."
And then Sasha added, "Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up."
So it's -- it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective."

Normally, I wouldn't dare post anything Fox News related on this blog, but when I saw this video I felt it was relevant to share. For anyone that is familiar with Glenn Beck and his asinine commentary, it is very clear that he is beyond misinformed. If you find yourself watching even a minute of his show you will probably witness one of his many tirades or meltdowns.

Whatever the case may be, Beck now believes that he is an art historian/critic and took it upon himself to explain how a few public art pieces are linked to Communism, Fascism and Progressives (as if the three have everything to do with one another). This is exactly how false information is spread. I'm sure this man has little to no knowledge about art, yet he speaks as if he does. To witness the insanity, check out the video above. Sharp as always, she was a much needed breath of fresh air amongst a sea of ill-fitting suits and monotonous commentary from the others; I thoroughly enjoyed her presence. Hopefully MSNBC will bring Burt-Murry back for future segments.

The show, which is titled Intersections Intersected: The Photography of David Goldblatt, provocatively captures the complexities of South African society. Goldblatt's photos touch upon issues of politics, morality and the preservation of heritage. The show closes October 11th, so if you are in the NYC area be sure to check it out.

By the way, I love the architectural juxtaposition of the sterile facade of New Museum and the adjacent buildings; New Museum looks like an urban yet zen oasis.

I'm currently redecorating, which seems like fun, until you actually have to do it...on a budget. Whatever the case may be, I'm really feeling this chandelier from Urban Outfitters. In the past, I would have considered this to be a bit too loud for my liking, but I'm beginning to think this could be the perfect piece to add a much needed splash of color to an unadorned room. On the other hand, I definitely need to check this chandelier out in person, depending on the material, it could very well look cheap. We shall see...

Don't get me wrong, Naomi looks gorgeous, but how many times are we going to see this trite depiction of a black woman, cloaked in animal-print, posing in some sort of jungle or rural setting. I thought that we've moved past these portrayals, but I see not much has changed...

I understand that most models have very little authority when it comes to their photoshoots, but as a fashion veteran, I would think that Naomi would have more authority than most. I don't think this shoot was intended to be offensive, but enough is enough, fashion is all about creativity, that being said, it's time to see some new ideas.

Dana Thomas recently wrote a provocative article for the Huffington Post surrounding the current state of the fashion industry. The author brazenly attributes greed as one of the many reasons the fashion industry is struggling. Like many industries, the recession has hit the fashion world with a vengeance. Over the past few months, famed fashion houses have seen their sales plummet. Thomas' article, appropriately titled "The Party's Over", examines a recent meeting held by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. At this gathering, industry insiders and designers searched for ways to maintain their consumer base during this incessant recession.

Like many businesses, the fashion industry will have to go through some level of reform to weather the times. If fashion houses want to maintain consumers, they need to deflate prices. Alterations in price should not compromise the creativity of designers, but rather challenge them to create quality clothing that is affordable and chic.

A few days ago, I was informed that the home of Peggy Cooper Cafritz was destroyed in a fire Wednesday evening. Ironically, Cafritz's home was recently featured in O Magazine and on Cocoture. Needless to say, this whole situation is a travesty. Along with the majority of her personal belongings, Cafritz's incredible art collection was destroyed in the disaster. Fortunately, no one was in the home at the time. Our hearts go out to Cafritz and her family at this difficult time.

Want a Drink? Starbucks Wants to be Your Go To Spot

Starbucks is following the European model and integrating a beer and wine list into their menu. Over the years, the mega coffee chain has received flack for feeling more like a conglomerate than a neighborhood coffee shop. With specialty beverages that will run you anywhere from $3-6 and locations literally across the street from one another, it's no surprise that people have become disillusioned with the chain. Recently, the company has attempted to restructure and revamp its image, which among many changes has included the creation of a new logo. The most recent attempts to revitalize Starbucks have included the renaming of stores and the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Seattle will be the first city to have a Starbucks Corporation shop that sells spirits. The renaming of coffee shops is one of the most drastic changes this company has undergone; some of the stores that were previously labeled "Starbucks" will adopt the name of their respective locations. For example, a ubiquitous "Starbucks" in Seattle has been renamed "15th Avenue Coffee and Tea", which is appropriately labeled after the shops location. If all goes as planned, the company will adopt this model in other cities and locations.

As a self proclaimed coffee and wine connoisseur I think this is an AWFUL idea. The downfall of Starbucks has been caused by the exorbitant prices and mass produced nature of their products. Instead of adding additional items to the menu Starbucks needs to improve the quality of their coffee. Generally, restaurants generate a hand picked wine list with selections that compliment their food. I hate to be pessimistic about this project but I can only imagine a Starbucks wine and beer list including a host of sub par overpriced selections. I don't know about you, but I plan on continuing to stay away from the coffee conglomerate and stick to local coffee shops, wine bars and restaurants with wine selections I can trust. If a shop can't make a decent latte something tells me selecting a halfway decent wine is out of the picture...

Helene Cooper, a White House correspondent for the New York Times, wrote an interesting piece on the affects of education on a new generation of minority leaders, a group the author labels the "new elite". The racial integration of prominent universities has begin to level the playing field and provide invaluable opportunities to a bright yet disenfranchised group of students. Cooper references notable political figures such as the Obamas and Eric Holder as members of the "new elite".

Art and Reality TV

Let me begin by saying that I loath the fact that EVERYTHING on TV is a "reality" show, but like many Americans, from time to time I am guilty of indulging in mindless "unscripted" TV. Currently, a new show is in the works that will document a competition between 13 contemporary artists. The show is being produced by Sarah Jessica Parker (whom I LOVE) and will show artists competing to win a gallery show and a museum tour featuring their work.

I am definitely intrigued by this concept. I think it will be somewhat tough to pull off given that art and taste are subjective, but I think it will present a great opportunity to showcase the work of these artists. A show of this sort will bring more exposure to the arts, and not only exhibit the finished products, but also reveal the creative process. Since contemporary art is based heavily upon the ideas of the artist, I think this will provide a great opportunity for viewers to tap into the psyche of these individuals and begin to appreciate the intellect and ingenuity of artists. I'm definitely tuning in!

I really enjoyed Kristi York Wooten's article on the importance of the National Black Arts Festival. For years this has been a space for African Americans artists working in all mediums to exhibit and share their work. The African American experience is integral to the history of this nation and a festival of this sort provides a platform for artists of the African diaspora. Without this festival many black artists would not have an opportunity to share their work and patrons of the arts (especially those that are interested in the African American experience) would be deprived of an opportunity to explore the black experience through the arts.

Reebok has created a shoe that is inspired by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of my FAVORITE artists. Although the shoe is not my style, I give Reebok an "A" for effort. I really love the fusion of visual art and fashion (which in many ways is one and the same), and I hope that more companies will create lines that draw upon the works of artists.

The August issue of O Magazine has a great (and when I say great I mean GREAT) article on art collector and patron Peggy Cooper Cafritz . Cafritz's dynamic career has included stints as a lawyer, educator and longtime arts advocate.

In addition to the wonderful article on Cafritz, the collector shares advice to those that are interested in beginning or expanding an art collection.

1. "Trust your gut—buy artists who really grab you."
2. Search for affordable pieces at art graduate school and high school exhibitions.
3. Look for great inexpensive photos to purchase from newspaper or magazine archives.
4. Buy an artist early. "It gives you a career to follow." One young artist topping her list is William Villalongo (WilliamVillalongo.com). "So many stories, which include mythical and military images, come out of his work," Cafritz says. Another favorite, Frohawk Two Feathers (TaylorDecordoba.com), creates watercolor and crayon portraits with historical themes. "They both have a tremendously layered aesthetic. They're students of history and archaeology. They're just amazing."

I LOVE the decor of her home. She has created a decorative motif that is vibrant, but far from overbearing. Her art collection includes an assortment of mediums and speaks to her varied interests and eccentric taste.

I took a peep at a few collections offered by Olsen Haus, Stella McCartney and Tom's Shoes and I must say that I took a liking to Olsen Haus design approach moreso than the others. What I did find amazing is that Tom's Shoes donates one pair of shoes to a child in need, per purchase. Nothing like public service and philanthropy to make my day. Stella McCartney, an eco-friendly designer, also chimed in with a few environmental tips listed on her site in accordance with a special project with "alternative sourcing and new designs". I would like to share a few of them that really impacted me:

Here We Go Again...

It looks like Shepard Fairey is still in a world of trouble over this infamous "Hope" image of Barack Obama used in the 2008 presidential campaign. This case has been taken to court by the Associated Press which claims that Fairey copied their image without the publishing giants consent. To make matters even more complicated, Mannie Garcia, the freelance journalist that took this photograph in 2006 claims that this photo was not taken while he was on assignment for the Associated Press, therefore she is the rightful owner of the photograph. This is all quite complicated, but it seems to me that artists should have the freedom to use photographs as sources of inspiration. I by no means believe that artists should plagiarize, but I do feel it is important to draw inspiration from everyday life. This case is in the hands of the court, but dare I ask, should this case even be in court?

The Huffington Post has a great article on Jenna Lyons, the creative director of J. Crew. In the past, J. Crew was considered a one-stop-shop for basics, but recently the company has featured an eclectic collection filled with soft pastels, delicate fabrics and subtle yet eye-catching patterns. Lyons was also featured on the cover of Domino magazine a few months before the periodicals premature demise. Each season I become more and more impressed by J.Crew. I love the direction Lyons has taken the retail conglomerate's collection, she has infused a basic yet modern sensibility that is both simple and elegant.

A Magnificent Sight Indeed

Ugghhhhh I am literally jealous, how I wish I was back in Italy. The Sistine Chapel is a breathtaking sight, and quite frankly, a surreal experience. I had the opportunity to visit this magnificent chapel and I was taken aback by the intricate detailing of the figures, the vibrant colors (thanks to modern conservation techniques) and the sheer magnitude of the fresco. The journey to this chapel was filled with anxiousness and saturated with art. Everywhere I turned there was a statue, painting or tapestry that was straight out of an Art History text. As I traveled through the Vatican, which seemed like a endless maze, my excitement grew. Upon arriving in the chapel I was overwhelmed by the high ceilings and looming fresco overhead. What amazed me was not only the detailed nature of the figures, but also the narrative quality of the fresco. If you ever have an opportunity to visit Rome, the Sistine Chapel is a must see.

Disclaimer: I was fortunate enough to be taken on a private tour of the Vatican, which allowed me to bypass the lines, but if you are traveling on your own prepare to wait in LONG lines. I visited last April and I would say the wait was AT LEAST 3 hours long. Of course it is well worth the wait, but a wait nevertheless.

While the president was dealing with foreign affairs and international diplomacy the girls were out and about around Rome. The First Family seem to be enjoying their time abroad, all while looking comfy, casual and cool. They had a chance to soak up the sights and explore the city in style. This photo shows the Obamas visiting the Pantheon, which is a magnificent structure. Last year I spent quite sometime in Italy and I can confidently say the country is divine.

As promised, Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the infamous stimulus plan, has reached the arts. The National Endowment for the Arts will be distributing 50 million dollars to arts organizations across the nation. California is one of the many states to reap the benefits of stimulus monies and quite frankly, it couldn't come at a better time. The state has been given approximately 4.45 million dollars to ensure the sustainability of local arts organizations. These funds will not only be used to preserve and generate employment, but the money will also be applied to future programming ventures. 50 million may not seem like a lot considering the needs of these organizations, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. Bravo Mr. Obama, bravo.

In the wake of this economic turmoil, many cities are looking for inventive ways to accumulate revenue. St. Louis is the most recent city to install a public art project that is garnering national attention. Citygarden is both a park and a sculpture garden. Comprised of works by Modern and Contemporary artists, this space is sure to draw national acclaim. City officials hope this project will not only revitalize this space, but also draw both local and national visitors. The city's plans do not end here, city officials hope to further develop the area surrounding the Citygarden in an effort to revive St. Louis.

This Jamaican born, model turned gallery director is one of SoHo's key players in the art world. She went from cat walking on the Calvin Klein runways to studying art history and business at NYU. In a matter of two years, Nicola Vassell blossomed from an intern at Deitch Projects gallery in SoHo, to a director. It was meant to be...

Though the art world is historically known for being dominated by white males, the ever changing globalization of the art market has ushered in a wave of multiculturalism. It is very rare to find a successful black director in a mainstream gallery, but Ms. Vassell is symbolic of the heartbeat of change.

Attending hundreds of parties held each and and traveling to major art exhibitions in Switzerland, London, Venice and Miami are just a few of the fabulous perks that Ms. Vassell enjoys on the job. One of her most important projects as of late: coordinating a meeting between contemporary art sensation Kehinde Wiley, a Los Angeles native, and athletic goods company Puma. Puma sent Mr. Wiley a contract to create a clothing/accessories collection for the 2010 World Cup to he held in Africa for the first time. This type of deal is one that Ms. Vassell sees as essential to the economic future of the contemporary art world. Ms. Vassell has sold Wiley's paintings to at least a dozen museums.

She's savvy, she's flyy and clearly she is in charge.

When we started this blog we did not anticipate having a political focus. This was not intended to be a place for us to exercise an agenda, but rather a forum to share the people and things that inspire us. As of late, it’s looking like we fancy all things Obama. The Obama’s have become some of the driving forces of Cocoture. They are public figures that not only motivate us, but also inspire the masses. This does not mean that we have forfeited our commitment to fashion and the arts, but rather have incorporated these interests into our coverage of the First Family and company. It’s a new day, and I could not be more pleased. We know its been said time and time again, but Barack, we salute you. As dismal as the economy may be, in our minds, 2009 is our best year yet. Why? If you are in the Los Angeles area be sure to stop by the Los Angeles Art Show. This four-day cultural affair began January 21st and concludes the 25th.

In addition to the art, there are a number of events that speak to the contemporary art connoisseur, collector, as well as those that would simply like to learn more about the arts. Although all of the events appear to be fascinating, I am particularly interested in Art As An Alternative Asset: Issues & Solutions. This panel discussion will address the current state of the art market and provide valuable advice to individuals that would like to begin collecting art. Needless to say, the spiraling economy has taken a toll on pretty much every industry, including the arts. In recent news, MOCA (The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles) has been in dire need of funding, and had to be bailed out by Los Angeles art collector Eli Broad. I am curious to see if the panel will discuss the state of cultural institutions and speculate the fate of the art market.

Most of the Los Angeles Art Show events are free of charge, but admission to The Art of Fashion at the Los Angeles Art Show, one of the premier events, will require you to RSVP with rsvpla@modernluxury.com. In the past, the show was held in Santa Monica at Barker Hanger, but the recent relocation to the Los Angles Convention Center, located in Downtown L.A. is sure to draw a sizable crowd. Vogue is on a winning streak. The February issue features Desiree Rogers, the chic new White House Social Secretary. This is not the first time Vogue has featured this powerful style maven, the magazine also highlighted her in a 2004 issue. To add to my utter delight, the photograph for this recent article was taken in front of a Henry Monroe sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. "The Life of the Party" discusses her stellar resume, which includes stints as the director of the Chicago Lottery as well as president of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. Rogers consistently manages to look fly, constantly clad in timeless well-tailored clothing. But let’s be real, with Michelle Obama in your inner circle I wouldn’t expect anything less.

January Magazine Issues Do Not Disappoint

Inside this month's Vogue:

My perfect day includes a sipping smooth cappuccino, listening to jazz (I suggest creating a Coltrane playlist on Pandora…it’s splendid) and flipping through the latest issues of Essence and Vogue. If you haven’t had a chance to pick up the January issues of these magazines I suggest you snap them up before they vanish from newsstands. Vogue and Essence are chalked with touching Obama tributes.

The staff at Essence decided to dedicate the entire issue to the Obama’s, and include a number of essays written by prominent black figures. This sentimental issue is simply incredible. It is thought provoking, touching and monumental. In addition to written accounts, the magazine also includes photos that trace the First Family on the campaign trail. This is truly a keepsake, and one of those issues that you will want to pull out years down the line to show your children.

The January issue of Vogue did not disappoint. In addition to including Laura Jarrett (Valerie Jarrett’s daughter) as one of the best-dressed women of 2008, the editors drafted a touching letter addressing the president-elect and his wonderful family. The eloquent piece expresses the magazines support for Barack and a fervent desire for change. To top it all off, one of Vogue’s fashion spread includes Jordan Dunn, one of the hottest girls on the catwalk.

A Recession Proof Evening

A couple of weeks ago, a friend introduced me to The Edison, a swanky lounge in Downtown Los Angeles. Located inside of the former Edison power plant building, this glamorous space has a vibe that channels the opulence of the1920’s. When guests enter the building, hosts in chic flapper dresses greet them.

In addition to the ambiance, I am convinced The Edison has the best happy hour in town. Rescission and all, Fridays at the Edison are not to be missed. For a mere 35 cents, I indulged in a fabulous cocktail appropriately named the “Bailout”, a petite cup of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. In addition, happy hour proceeds are donated to a local soup kitchen. Need I say more… If you are in the Los Angeles area make your way down to the Edison, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
